The significance of Aurangabad rose prominence during the medieval history of India i.e. just before and during the Moghul rule. There are many tourist locations across the region such “Bibi-ka-Maqbara” is a prototype of Taj Mahal. Aurangzeb’s son built “Bibi-ka-Maqbara” in 1679, in memory of his mother, Begum RabiaDurani. Beautiful work of Mughal architecture can be found on the structure.
“Pan Chakki” which literally means “the Water Mill”, constructed during 17th century. With the force of water (Hydro-Energy), this mill grinds (powders) grain, which are used to make roti. A beautiful garden and pond is attached to this “Pan Chakki”.
There are few other places, which has to be seen, they are “Aurangabad Caves”, “Chatrapati Shivaji museum” etc. “Daulatabad Fort”, is situated at a distance of 13km from Aurangabad. Ajanta caves are 95 kms and Ellora caves are only 30kms away from Aurangabad.
“Grishneshwar” temple is one of the significant pilgrimage place for devotees of Lord Shiva. This temple is located about 30 Kms from Ellora caves, near Aurangabad. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga of India.
During 18th century, Queen AhilyabaiHolkar, the ruler of Indore, rebuilt the Grishneshwar temple. The wonderful architecture of the temple depicted in the south Indian style. The temple has tall five story ‘Shikharas-The Dooms’. The main hall of the temple have 24 pillars, beautiful carving can be observed on these pillars. The sculpture inside and outside the temple illustrate the mythological stories related Lord Shiva and Dashavatara of Lord Vishnu and so on.
