Murud JanjiraFort is a unique of its kind, situated on an island, offshore to a coastal village Murud, on the Konkan coast of Raigad city, Maharashtra. The name of the fort is originated from Konkani word “Morod” and Arabic word “Jazeera”, consecutively arrives to the meaning “Island”. The fort offers amazing view around. This fort is attracts huge number of travelers from Pune and Mumbai regularly.In nearby area it is referred as “Janjira, “Jal Durg” which means “Sea fort”. To reach the fort, Sailboats are available and they operate from Rajapuri.
Many interpretations are there while defining the construction of the Janjira Fort. Architect Raja Ram Rao Patil got this remarkable citadel built, after getting the permission from Sultan of Ahmednagar, for peaceful living of local “Koli” people, from various pirates. But after that Sultan’s army seized the fort. Later the fort sustained continuous attacks by Marathas and Mughals, but none conqueredit. For that reason, Janjira fort is famously known as “AjinkyaKila” or “Un-conquered Fort”.
